I'm so excited about these two recent purchases. I have been wanting the Epiglade Epilator for a year now and just couldn't and absolutely wouldn't pay $100 for it. So the other day while I was in Target I saw this beauty stashed in the clearance aisle and I knew I absolutely HAD to get it. If you ladies don't know what the Epiglade is, it's basically another form of hair removal. It's like tweezing a bunch of hairs all at one time. The device works as a mega tweezer pulling hairs from the root. It does hurt just a tad bit but I do like the results so far. I didn't experience any burning or irritation like I have with my razor and if the reviews are right I shouldn't see hair growing back for about 2 weeks which is AWESOMENESS.

So as I perused the clearance aisle I also came across the InStyler. Supposedly America's #1 best selling flat iron. I have seen countless late night infomercials on the product and always wondered if it really worked, well I gave it a shot last night and let me be the first to tell you I am so surprised at the results. Unlike my ordinary flat iron my hair was super soft after being straightened and it was BONE STRAIGHT! It took half the time for me to press my hair compared to my flat iron and, I had not one little kink mark left behind like I normally get with my flat iron. The great part about it is the InStyler also worked as a curling iron. So I think my money was well worth this purchase ;) Check out my results below.

Every now then I love to cuddle up and read a great book. For a few weeks now, I have been searching for some new reads and yesterday while I was at my mom's house rummaging through her collections, I came across these two awesome finds "The Shack" by William P. Young and "Hinds Feet on High Places" by Hanna Hurnard. Although this will be my second time reading "The Shack", I just can't seem to get enough of it. The book tells the story of........................... did you really think I was going to dish out all the wonderful deets? YEA RIGHT!!!!. Ladies this book is a MUST READ! As for "Hinds Feet on High Places", I have yet to read it but trust it will definitely be by my bedside tonight. Ladies, let me know if you have read either one of these or would like to start a book group for them.

There must be something pretty amazing about parting ways with a celebrity stylist like Rachel Zoe. That pretty amazing thing is, you get your own reality show lol lol ;) Do you ladies remember Taylor Jacobson? you know the no nonsense ex-stylist understudy that worked with Rachel Zoe? Well, just like Brad (Rachel's ex assistant) she too will be coming out with her own reality show "LA Style".The show will chronicle four up and coming stylists that are trying to make their names known in the fashion world. But get this, filming for the show will start in February during NY Fashion Week and we all know Rachel Zoe, Brad Goreski and a slew of other stylists, designers, and fashion friendly people will be in attendance. Now I don't know what the breakup with Rachel Zoe was like but I wonder if when the show airs we'll be able to see some pretty awkward Fashion Week moments.

Reality queens Kim, Kourtney and Khloe are at it again. A few months back I told you ladies about their Kardashian Kollection collab with Sears. Well, the sister trio are at it again, launching their own denim line catered to all different sizes of woman. There are three styles in the collection each named after one of the sisters. "The Kim" is a sexy, low cut straight leg jean, "The Kourtney" is skinny leg jean, and "The Khloe" is a tall, curvy high rise boot cut jean. Each of the styles come in two different washes and retail at $68. You can find the collection at your local Sears and be on the lookout ladies for their swimwear collection hitting this Spring and Summer. I will definitely keep you ladies posted on that one.

Ladies I hope your as excited as I am because rumors have been surfacing around the fashion world that Balenciaga and YSL may be the next designers to collab with Target (drooling)! However, nothing has yet to be set in stone but here's how it will work. Target will be doing away with their "Go International" collaboration model and adapting "The Shops at Target". Every 2 to 4 months Target will bring in a new batch of high end shops to sell more affordable versions of their line. I'm seriously crossing my fingers and toes to see if Target will really launch these lines and many other high end designer lines. I will definitely keep you ladies posted.

What words comes to mind when you think of Mikki Taylor? Maybe you think of Essence Magazine, or the fact that she's an author, or maybe you even think of her being a style icon and beauty editor. Well she's all those things and then some. Last night, I had the great opportunity to sit and chat with the fashion and beauty editor extraordinaire. She dished about her amazing new book "Commander in Chic" which is centered around First Lady Michelle Obama's style and how to achieve it. It tells all about great fashion finds, how to develop your own style, and her own personal tips (Mikkisms). She even dished about what it was like growing up with a mother who styled big name celebrities like Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald.

1. What is a "Commander in Chic"?

"A Commander in Chic is someone who owns her life and masters her style with distinction. It's not so much about being trendy it's about establishing your own style and being comfortable in your own skin"

2. Why did you choose First Lady Michelle Obama to be the inspiration of your book?

" Because her philosophy is one every woman can embrace. She's a trend setter not a trend follower. She's extremely fashionable and I also think she sends the right message about style, that it's not all about the new, especially in these economic times. She doesn't mind wearing the same dress twice and she's comfortable in her own skin."

3. What kinds of fashion and beauty tips does your book give?

"With Commander in Chic you can open your closet and learn how to reorder it and know what to wear, you can go shopping with Commander in Chic from Payless to Neiman Marcus and find the best picks. You can know when to shop and when to enter that fabulous zone called "Sale". I want people to use Commander in Chic as a personal style diary. I want them to write in it and add to it."

4. What does "style" mean to you?

"Style is really about how you see yourself from within and the care you in turn give yourself in light of recognizing your value."

5. If you had to choose 3 distinct points on developing style what would they be?

"I think the first thing would be to understand what works for you. Secondly, how you live your life, your budget of course, and even as I explained in the book I talk about making that all important nude assessment, what do you want to accent on your body. What is it that you love about yourself, because if you don't you will be handed a style that is not yours. Ask yourself what's my style, am I a romanticist, do I love a bohemian style, am I a modern minimalist."

6. On a more personal note, what was it like having a mother who basically conquered it all ie...wardrobe stylist, hair stylist, makeup artist?

"O my God it was awe inspiring, my mother worked for many years with the legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughn. It was fascinating, she would go to Europe and find makeup in our skin tones that she couldn't find on these shores. The magazines she brought back from from different parts of the world. The people in her circle like Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne it was awesome. I loved going to entertainment shows with her it was quite inspiring and a great time to be a little girl especially after the shows were all done I would get all into her makeup and furs."

6. What tips would you give others that are trying to find their way in the fashion field?

"Th7 Creator has instilled a gift that's distinctly ours in each of us it's that thing you do, like you do, that no one else can do it like you do it and your job is to identify it and then to spend every bit to honor Him therein and to use it to color your world and the lives of others.

8. Lastly, what can we expect next from you?

"Well I'm trying to find a clone, there's too much on Mikki Taylor's plate I'm trying to keep up with her (laughs) Actually, I have a nail lacquer line coming out called the Forever Nude Collection by Mikki Taylor. It's built as a line of directional hues. There are six shades that will debut this spring at retailers hopefully like Sephora and Nordstrom.

It's A Brad Brad World

I love how all these major stylists are getting their own reality shows. First Rachel Zoe, then June Ambrose with "Juniverse" next month, and now ex assistant to Rachel Zoe, Brad Goreski. Brad has teamed with Bravo to launch his own reality show "It's a Brad Brad World". The show follows stylist Brad Goreski as he ventures into the world of styling and making his name even more known without Rachel Zoe. I watched the first episode last week and was definitely surprised to see that for Brad he was having a little trouble breaking into the field he knows so much about. I can't wait for the next episode and I hope this show brings him the notoriety he deserves. Tune into Bravo Monday's at 10pm for your Braderific Fix ;)

Christmas is in 6 days and if your anything like me your still shopping for that special person in your life. You just don't know what to get him or her so you've put it off until the very last minute hoping the perfect gift will come to mind. Well, I'm here to give you a little assistance.

FOR HIM

In my opinion, men can be rather hard to shop for during Christmas but you have to remember ladies they are simple. A little this, a little that and waa- laa their happy. A game here, a tv there lol and they are in heaven.However, if your not into spending big money this Christmas check out my list for him.

1. Wallets- they make a great gift because every man needs a nice leather wallet. You can even go the extra step and get his name or initials engraved on it for a few extra dollars.

2. Pajamas- most men don't invest in pajamas. Majority of the time you can see them lounging around the house in some old sweatpants or athletic gear.So buying him some comfortable pajamas and slippers will be an awesome surprise.

3. Itunes Music Card- Everyone loves music so an Itunes music card is perfect for him. Get him a $25 dollar card and he can load games, music, just about anything onto his Ipod.

4. Watch- they say you can tell how hard a man works by his watch. So get him something that says he's a hard working man. Remember, you don't have to break the bank to get him a really nice looking watch.

For Her

Women are easier to shop for (and it's not just because I'm a woman). There are so many great gift options to give a woman. Here's a few tips on finding the perfect one.

1. Perfume- Every girl loves smelling good especially around her man so buy her some of her favorite perfume she will love the gift I can guarantee.

2. Flowers- Flowers are a girls best friend right next to diamonds. Buy her a dozen roses and her favorite candy. It will show her you were thinking of her and it definitely says your a romantic.

3. Purse- Just like a wallet a woman loves a nice bag. Men remember you don't have to break the bank buying her a designer bag something nice, leather, and chic will be just as good.

4. Makeup- If your girl is into makeup when she's away sneak into makeup pouch and find the names of her favorite lipstick or foundation. She won't be expecting for you to know this, so it will be a great surprise.

Ladies "There's an app for that" yes, your wardrobe can you believe it. Last night at the BNO event I attended I was introduced to the Stylebook App for the Iphone and its pretty amazing. This app allows you to bring your wardrobe to life. You can create outfits using your own clothes, create mood boards, keep track of all your pieces, it even tells you how often you've worn a particular item. I have always enjoyed writing and reading. I used to sit in my rooms for hours and read, read, read, and at night I would journal. I guess when your young you just consider it as writing in your "Diary". But as I got older I stopped journaling as much until NOW! I decided I would start journaling again but this time it wouldn't be about a secret crush, or what outfit I wanted to wear to the school dance. This time I decided to journal about things that inspire me, random thoughts of inspiration, and bible scriptures that would better me. So to make this long story short, if your not a journaler (is that a word) try it out it's a great way to get in touch with the inner you ;)

As you ladies and gents know last month I was one of 24 style icons selected to take part in Cotton's 24 hour fashion show. Well, while I was in Miami for those LOVELY 4 days I got the chance to meet Fred, Ladonna and Ralph and we instantly just clicked. It's so weird how you can never know someone and instantly feel like you've met a life long friend. I was so inspired by Fred's style the entire time I was down there so I just knew he had to be my first male "Style Spotlight". So here he is......meet Fred Jerome.

1. Describe your personal style.

"My personal style is trendy with an edge. I like taking clothes that are in style and putting the "Fred" spin on them with a bold hat, shoes or a scarf to give me that edge. I would also say my style is very versatile because I love trying different things with fashion."

2. Who would you say is your celeb stylecon?

"My celeb style icon would definitely be Kanye West. Mr. West has always been a trendsetter and isn't afraid to take risks, like wearing women's fashion and making it look masculine. His swagger makes it all the more better. Pure Style"

3. What are your three favorite trends right now?

"In men's fashion my three favorite trends of course are skinny jeans, slim ties, and the infamous denim jacket"

4. Fashion is..............?

"Fashion is whoever you are. If you are bold and colorful or dark and edgy it all comes across in your style. Fashion is about taking clothes and making it your own. It's about creating your own personal style. To me fashion is a way of life"

5. Do you think it takes lots of money to be fashionable?

"Personally, I do not have lots of money, and I know people who enjoy fashion that are avid thrift shoppers. You definitely don't have to have lots of money to look fashionable. Shopping clearance racks is my favorite hobby and even thrifting for vintage pieces is hot."

6. What tips would you give others that want to develop their own personal style?

"Always be yourself and look at fashion blogs for current trends and inspiration. Don't be afraid to test the waters of fashion because that's what makes fashionistas stand out from the crowd and ALWAYS no matter what be confident."

The Do's and Don'ts of Holiday Office Parties

Tis the season for eating good, getting and giving great gifts, and lots of office holiday parties. So here are my tips on staying offfice party chic and wowing your co-workers.

1. Keep it Classy: Although the atmosphere may be engaging and free spirited don't let that be your que to wear whatever comes to mind on that day. Remember, you are still sending a message about yourself professionally so make sure your outfit reflects that. Opt for dresses that are not too tight or skirts that are not too short.

2. Relax: Yes, your company may be hosting the event but that doesn't mean you have to talk business the entire time your there. Talk about things like your favorite trends or designers,

what's going on in the media, and/or places and restaurants you have recently visited.

3. Mints....Mints....Mints....: There's nothing worse than munching on that awesome hor devour and then walking around with tart breathe the entire night, especially if the event is all about mixing and mingling. Keep a few mints in your bag to pop when your done eating.

4. "Clutchin": Since you don't necessarily want your outfit to be too far out, let your clutch pick up the slack. A killer clutch can turn that stellar outfit into STELLARNESS! So go for a clutch that's eye popping.

American Apparel's Newest Polishes

As you ladies know, I'm a HUGE fan of American Apparel's polishes, not only because I love how fast they dry and their amazing variety of colors but because they are free of lots of harmful chemicals like DBP, Toluene and Formaldehyde. Last week I popped into the store just to see if they had any new colors and guess what, their newest Fall/Winter collection was on display. I didn't plan on buying anything but walked away with these three awesome shades Gold Flush (gold), Lopez Canyon (orange), and Imperial Purple (purple). Their metallic line is AMAZING! I'm in love with Gold Flush right now.

Last night I attended the Beauty and Style Soiree held at Hela Salon and Spa. It was my first time every being there and I was highly impressed. The salon and spa was equipped with everything to make you feel like a million bucks massage rooms, acupuncture, dentistry, the whole nine yards I had an amazing time viewing the facility and got the chance to go one on one with Joelle from Joelle Skin Care. It was a pleasure chatting with her and asking her questions about skin. Check out my one on one.

1. What tips would you give to women ages 20-30 on maintaining healthy facial skin?

" In your 20's your skin is at a healthy state you just want to keep it there as long as you can so you definitely want to avoid sun bathing. Also, consider your lifestyle and how you are eating. Lastly, don't use alot of products on your face. Three products is all you really need unless you are correcting something, that can be your fourth product simply because too many products can lead to other problems.

2. Hyperpigmentation....what are the causes and cures for it?

"With hyperpigmentation and people of color that's the way the body fights inflammation. For instance, if you cut yourself and it's red the melanocytes run there and cause more melanin in that area making it a dark mark. So if you get a pimple and it's red it's going to leave a mark. There really isn't too much you can do about the actual reason for hyperpigmentation but once it happens having an exfoliant and a lightner is all you really need.

3. For women in their 40's how would you recommend maintaining healthy skin?

"It really depends on what your facing at 40 and what you did from 20 to 40. Some women are going through menopause, or have had children or are reaping the effects of sun bathing in their 20's but generally at that stage in your life you're trying to reverse something. That's usually the corrective time. You can also still be practicing prevention throughout this stage because usually when your preventing one thing it's giving overall improvement anyway.

I was in desperate need of some brush cleaner so I picked up Sonia Kashuk's Sponge and Brush Cleaner from Target the other day. Then I came across this AMAZING deep navy blue polish I had to pick up and add to my polish collection. Isn't it so pretty.

New Foundations

With the seasons changing of course it means it's time to start switching out those summer foundations. I normally don't go for drugstore foundation simply because you can't test it out on your skin before you buy it but I've heard some really good reviews on Revlon's 16 HR Color Stay and Neutrogena's Healthy Skin foundations so I decided to give them a try. I took my summer MAC foundation to the store with me and I went for a little lighter shade so my new foundations wouldn't be too dark.

The Fabric of My Life: My Cotton Style Icon Experience

If you've been wondering why I haven't been blogging as much as I normally do it's because I have been away in Miami enjoying Cotton's Style Icon 24 Hour Fashion Show I told you all about. It was such a GREAT time meeting new people and creating new friendships as well as being a model and not a stylist for a fashion show. I had such a good time I literally did not stop laughing the entire weekend. Check out some of my pics from the trip.

We stayed at the Mondrian Hotel in Miami it was AMAZING! and the customer service was great.

While I was in Miami I got a chance to chat with some of the many makeup artists for the 24 hour Cotton Fashion Show. Backstage I spoke with Kerleen Perkles about all her makeup Do's, Don'ts and must haves.......

1. What would you say are the top trends in makeup right now?

"The top trends I would have to say are bold lips, a winged smokey eye because everyone loves a smokey eye and a natural clean dewy look."

2. What are your Top 3 drugstore makeup foundations?

" Revlon, Loreal, and Covergirl"

3. What are your Top 3 favorite high-end makeup foundations?

"Makeup Forever would have to be my number 1. Alot of makeup artists use Makeup Forever, then it would have to be Chanel and Giorgio Armani"

4. What's your biggest makeup DON'T?

"The eyebrows!! Alot of people tend to draw their eyebrows on too thick or too harsh and it doesn't look natural so it's a must that when you do your eyebrows make sure to go very lightly over them first. Use your hand to very lightly fill them in."

5. What are some makeup tips and tricks every makeup wearer should know?

" Vaseline can be used with eye shadow to create a cream eye liner. If you want your brows to look sharp and clean and you don't have time to go get them done you can always use concealer under your brow for a sharpening effect, and lastly wearing concealer on your lips before applying red lipstick will make it last longer and matte it out."

6. For a beginner what are your makeup kit essentials?

"A lip pencil, foundation, setting powder and I have to say a good lipstick oooo and bronzer."

Got old clothes? Need cash fast? If so, your in for a treat. Ladies and Gents second hand thrift shop Buffalo Exchange is coming to DC (yayyyyyyyy). The Tuscon based thrift store chain offers cash for clothing and is an amazing place to shop for one of kind finds. But let me full warn you, the buyers of the store are generally highly selective on the items you exchange for cash, so don't bring clothing you think no one else would want to wear. I have shopped Buffalo Exchange stores in other cities (Las Vegas, Philadelphia) and was highly impressed with the selection, so I'm excited for their DC launch. Yesterday I was in TJ Maxx just browsing around not looking for anything in particular and I came across this flat iron by Fahrenheit. I've never used this type of flat iron before but I thought it had the cutest giraffe design and I was in DESPERATE need of a new flat iron anyway. The old one was just not cutting it anymore. So I asked a couple of the girls working there if they used it before and they all gave me really positive reviews so I pulled out my gift card and bought it. As soon as I got home I pulled out a strand of hair and put this flat iron to the test and let me tell you it passed with flying colors. I loved how it made my hair feel and I really liked the fact that there was a temperature dial to adjust the heat applied to my hair. It was only $24.95 and the box said it retailed for $275.00 so that's definitely MAJOR STEALLAGE!

She's a designer, an entrepreneur, a mother, and wife to legendary basketball player Magic Johnson. Ladies meet Cookie Johnson. This past weekend I had the pleasure to sit down and chat with Cookie about her latest jean collection "CJ Jeans"

1. Why did you decide to create a jean collection?

"I decided to create this jean collection because I couldn't find a jean to fit my body type. I have curves, I have thighs, and I have hips. I could squeeze into something, but it never came up high enough in the back to cover my butt, and the thighs they felt like they were so tight. I felt like I was strangling to put a pair of jeans on. So finally I got frustrated enough that I decided, I know I'm not the only one out here like this so I'm going to create a jean for a women with a real curve."

2. How does it feel to have Oprah as a huge fan of your jeans?

"O my God it's amazing it's like the ultimate! When I found out she liked the jeans I couldn't believe it. I just sent the jeans to her magazine because I wanted to see if she would wear them on a cover. Then I got a phone call and they told me she took them home from the shoot because she liked them so much. Then she told me she literally wore them 3 days in a row because she loved them and they were so comfortable she couldn't believe it. A month later I was on the show."

3. Ten years from now where do you see "CJ Jeans"?

"I would like to see a few things. I would like to see a men's line. I would like to see a juniors line, because there are a lot of young girls out there with curves. I also would like to have a collection that has some jackets and tops to go with the jeans, and lastly I would love to open my own stores."

4. What tips would you give to other designers looking to follow in your footsteps?

"I had a fashion background. I went to school for fashion merchandising. I was a buyer for years before I got married, had kids, and stopped working. So number one, make sure you go to school and learn your craft. Secondly, go get jobs at the places that are in the field you are looking to get into. Find a company that produces your craft and work for them so you can know what goes on and how it all comes together. Also consider partnering with someone because they already have the expertise you need."

5. What are your top three favorite trends right now?

"In denim it would be COLOR...COLOR....COLOR....Color is hot this Fall and for next Spring. You must do color whether you do it on the top or bottom. We want you to do it on the bottom. I have lots of color in my collection. Secondly, pattern jeans. They really are popular, we have leopard, we have python, we have cheetah coming in. Lastly, jeans with coding. They look like leather but they're actually jeans with a wax coding on them. You don't have the leather price point with them or the restriction because the material still gives. It fits your curves and is more comfortable."

6. Where can people find your collection?

"We're at Nordstom, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue"

How To Layer!

Summer is gone, the trees have changed colors, and the air is getting COLD! That means it's definitely time to start layering up with long sleeves, vests, scarves, etc.....So here's a few tips on how to layer fashionably.

1. The thinnest garment should always be worn closest to your skin. In turn, the thickest garment should be worn on the top layer. You do this to prevent unwanted bulges in your clothes.

2. Try not to layer clothing with the same style. For example if you have a ruffled top that you really want to wear don't pair it with a ruffled cardi. It becomes ruffle Over-Kill! So try to contrast the styles with a ruffled top and a plain blazer.

3. Scarves are GREAT for layering. Tuck them into a vest or jacket or even a button up shirt.

4. I'm a HUGE fan of blazers. They are absolutely PERFECT for the layered look typically because you have to wear something under them so.....try taking a form fitting plain top, throw a blazer on over and a scarf with a pair of jeans ;)

5. Try not to add more than 3 layers to your fit remember you still want to be comfortable!

This weekend I returned to my Alma mater Hampton University for homecoming and, I celebrated my friends birthday while I was down there. It was great running into old friends and spending time with old teammates. A STELLAR eye is probably the second most important component to wearing makeup (foundation being the first of course!). I'm always looking for a way to make my eyes stand out and POP without wearing really bright colors. Finding colors that compliment your eyes is the best way to make your eyes stand out in a subtle way so....without further ado here's a guide for you ladies.

BLUES

Blue eyes look awesome with really soft taupe colors like peaches, light browns, and tans. These colors contrast the eye making your eyes stand out and not your eyeshadow!

BROWNS

My eyes are light brown and I find that mauve's, purples, burgundies, browns and light tans really compliment my eyes.

GREENS

Green eyes really stand out with COLOR...so you green eyed beauties can pretty much play around with lots of colors. However, try to stay clear of really bright colors like hot pink etc..deep purples and golden browns work well.

*Remember regardless of your eye color the secret to making your eyes POP is great blending! So ladies make sure you blend properly*

DC Hearts The Arts
